#SBS24 Q&A: BC Place’s Chris May

Ahead of TheStadiumBusiness Summit 2024 in Manchester next month, we caught up with Chris May, General Manager of BC Place, to discuss a packed calendar of events for the Vancouver stadium.

BC Place has a capacity of over 54,500 and hosts games played by the Canadian Football League’s BC Lions and Major League Soccer’s Vancouver Whitecaps. It will also be a host venue during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Canada will stage alongside the US and Mexico.

May joined BC Pavilion Corporation in 2022, having previously served as vice-president of delivery and production at marketing agency SDImktg. Here, May looks ahead to next month’s Summit and discusses “one of the busiest years yet” for BC Place…

TheStadiumBusiness: What’s exciting you in the stadium sector at present?

Chris May: “In recent years we’ve seen a surge in technological innovations within the industry. From the integration of AI to immersive digital displays, there are endless opportunities to elevate the fan experience through technology. Here at BC Place, we’re exploring ways to leverage technological advancements and continue modernising our historic venue, which has stood for over 40 years.”

TSB: What’s in the pipeline for BC Place over the next six to 12 months?

CM: “We are experiencing one of our busiest years yet at BC Place and are very proud of our upcoming event line-up. This summer we will welcome The Rolling Stones on their Hackney Diamonds Tour, and Wrexham AFC will visit to take on our home team, Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

“In the fall we’ll be hosting the 111th Grey Cup Championship, not long followed by three much-anticipated nights of Taylor Swift, The Eras Tour. Between all that we’ll cheer on the ‘Caps and BC Lions for their regular seasons, host several Canada Rugby matches for both the women’s and men’s national teams, and have a myriad of film shoots, meetings and banquets, and trade and consumer shows in the mix.”

TSB: What are you most looking forward to about the Summit?

CM: “I am most looking forward to an opportunity to connect with other leaders and share thoughts and ideas on how to tackle challenges in our industry. I’m a big believer in ‘rising tides lifting all boats’ and using collaboration to drive industry growth.”
